Watching ‘The Crystal Maze’ was an inseparable part of my weekly routine growing up – nothing could beat watching Richard O’Brien of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame leading a team of hapless contests around the four zones of his devilish maze, playing his Harmonica and talking almost insanely with ‘mumsy’! A recent reboot of the show was less than successful, but this 90-Ball bingo game from Gamesys seems to be doing a little better – the average prizes weren’t very large at the time that I was writing this review, but the jackpot of over £20,000 suggests that this game is undoubtedly getting a lot of play at other times of the week.
Gamesys launched their Crystal Maze Bingo game in October 2018, and it's relatively unusual as far as online bingo games go in that – as you can see from the screenshots – a lot of effort has been made to tie this one in with the source material. We’ll talk more about that in the theme section below. Still, for now, I’ll simply mention that the ticket-grabbing bonus game that we all loved from the end of the television show has been included, in addition to a progressive jackpot that, as previously mentioned, currently stands at over £20,000!
This is all the more impressive given that this game can only be found at a handful of online bingo sites – Jackpotjoy and Double Bubble Bingo were the only two I could find listed on Google. However, it’s possible that it may also be present on some more Gamesys-based sites as well.

The Crystal Maze BingoNo prizes for guessing where the theme for Crystal Maze Bingo came from, but one thing that I was pleased to see was that the game is based on the original four zones – Aztec, Medieval, Futuristic, and Industrial. There’s no Ocean zone here – that one never made sense to me anyway! As far as other TV-themed bingo games go, we’ve had stuff like the excellent Deal or No Deal, along with the somewhat less impressive X-Factor and Britain’s Got Talent games, but for my money, I’d be willing to state that this one has had the most time and attention devoted to its theme by the developers – even the music from the show has been rendered faithfully!
The tickets utilised in Crystal Maze Bingo look like those used in any other 90-Ball bingo game, although you might not have guessed that if you had looked at the screenshots featured in this review before reading this! If you purchase a small number of tickets, a simplified view with all your numbers merged is shown instead of the regular three-row tickets, which I found to be more confusing than helpful. I’d note that this confusing layout isn’t used if you play the game on a mobile device, so if you have that option available, I’d recommend using it.

The Crystal Maze Bingo GameplayDespite the four different zones and elaborate theming behind The Crystal Maze 90-Ball Bingo, I’d still recommend checking out our dedicated article on this variant of the game before beginning to play. Next, it’s time to purchase your tickets at the price of 25p each – the number you are permitted to buy seems to vary wildly depending on the number of players participating – sometimes, I could purchase 60 tickets, whilst, for others, I was limited to just 12. This seems reasonable, however, as it ensures that there are never too many tickets in the game to make it overly difficult to win a prize. But, on the other hand, it does also limit the size of the prize pool substantially!
As with most other 90-Ball games, three prizes are paid – one for filling a single line on one of your tickets, another for two lines, and a third and final prize for the full house. Should more than one player hit any of these prizes on the same call, the money is divided equally between all of them – if you are lucky, you may be the only player to collect a big prize in a busy game, whilst on other occasions you may end up sharing your full house payout with half a dozen other players, making it much less exciting.

The Crystal Maze Bingo Winning PlayerGamesys could have been lazy and not bothered including a bonus round with Crystal Maze Bingo, but that would indeed have been doing a massive disservice to the amount of effort they had obviously put into the theming of the game! Even if you don’t win a cash prize in any particular round, you could still win some extra tickets for the next round – see below:
Crystal dome bonus game
If you have purchased more than six tickets for any round of Crystal Maze Bingo, you’ll be transported to the crystal dome after the winner(s) of the full house collects their monies. It’s a relatively simple bonus – just tap the screen to try and collect as many gold tickets as possible whilst hopefully dodging the silver ones.
When the final whistle blows, your tickets will be totted up, and you may be awarded some free tickets for the next round – this certainly isn’t a given, and I only managed to do this on one specific occasion. Still, 12 free 25p tickets for the next game represent a £3 bonus payout – much less than the £15 I paid to participate in the round itself, but it certainly was a pleasant surprise when it happened!

The progressive jackpot offered in Crystal Maze Bingo is a winner-takes-all jackpot – a rare thing in many online bingo rooms – and this fact alone does make this one of the more exciting bingo variants you’ll find at Gamesys sites. Unfortunately, the jackpot hasn’t been won for some time, but if you do manage to complete an entire ticket in less than 38 calls, you could be walking away over £20,000 richer. Now that’s a prize that the original contestants of The Crystal Maze would definitely have been impressed by!

Opinions on this game seem to vary wildly online – I really enjoyed it, but some other players felt it had little to offer over and above its Crystal Maze theme. Surely that’s the whole point, though? If you were a fan of the show growing up, you really can’t afford to miss out on a few rounds of Crystal Maze Bingo!
