The vast majority of 90-Ball games share a lot of aspects and features in common, so I’m always on the lookout for the next big standout game for us to check out. Fortunately, it seems that today is my lucky day as I’ve stumbled on Pragmatic Play’s jaw-dropping ‘The Gold Rush’ online bingo, a 90-Ball game that doesn’t mess around when it comes to prizes. The RTP is still very low, unfortunately – ‘above 70%’ is all that we are promised, a common fixture of this developers’ bingo offerings. On the plus side, the winner only progressive jackpot currently stands at almost £6,000, but you don’t need to win that to have a great day playing The Gold Rush, as even the regular prizes will pay you several thousand times the cost of a ticket!
Aside from its monstrous payouts, there aren’t many unique features to discuss with respect to this game – I don’t think it matters a great deal in this case, though. The Gold Rush is clearly intended as a competitor to other ‘headline’ bingo games such as Main Event Bingo, and it beats that one hands down as far as the payouts are concerned. I also like the fact the progressive jackpot on offer here is paid in full to the player who manages to hit it – most online bingo games insist on dividing half of the prize amongst the other participating players. Whilst that’s a nice idea, it just doesn’t seem very fair to the person who has probably spent a small fortune on tickets before managing to finally hit the big one!

The Gold Rush BingoIt’s still a shame that Pragmatic Play hasn’t done much with their ‘Gold Rush’ theme here, of course – why not have a bonus round where you go digging for gold nuggets or something along those lines? There’s obviously plenty of potential for such things, but unfortunately, there isn’t anything like that included here. Again, whilst this is a tad disappointing, it’s probably not very surprising given that every other ‘premium bingo game on the market is structured precisely the same way. It seems that games such as this are supposed to be all about the bingo, I guess.
The basic setup continues with respect to the game’s tickets – these are just the same as those utilised in dozens of other 90-Ball bingo games, consisting of three rows of five numbers each. There isn’t even a simplified view on offer, unfortunately – if you’ve purchased a large number of cards, you’ll just have to be satisfied keeping an eye on a handful of them! That seems quite likely here, too, as every player is permitted to purchase up to 300 cards per game – a huge number, but I guess that’s the only way you can offer the enormous prizes that this game does.
And the price of those cards? At the time of writing, each ticket for The Gold Rush will cost you 25p each. That doesn’t sound like much, but it soon adds up if you want to buy the maximum number of tickets for each game – if you did, it would cost you a massive £75 per round with a limit of 300 cards per player. If you did buy just a single ticket, then the one, two, and three-line prizes would represent 2000x, 2800x, and 7200x your buy-in, respectively. With the maximum number of cards, those returns dwindle to just 7x, 10x, or 25x – somewhat less impressive, I suspect. Somewhere in between the two seems like a good idea to me!

You’ll have plenty of time to do so, as this variant is only available for an hour between 9 PM and 10 PM each day. That seems a little restrictive to me – the prizes are not advertised as being guaranteed, so why is there a need for such a limited timetable? As well as limiting the number of players who can enjoy the game, this also ensures that the progressive jackpot will grow at a snail’s pace compared to that of any other 90-Ball game.
Still, if you can put up with the limited hours and rudimentary theme, this has to be one of the most lucrative 90-Ball games out there. There’s a high chance that you will end up sharing any prize that you do win with many other players – the progressive jackpot excluded, of course – which in my view, is all the more reason not to go too crazy when buying tickets for this game. Anything more than 100 at the absolute most is probably too many in my eyes; otherwise, the returns aren’t all that exciting compared to the buy-in.

To claim the jackpot in The Gold Rush, you will need to hit all 15 numbers on one of your tickets within the first 36 calls of a round. Despite this requirement, the prize is hit quite regularly, yet still stands at £5,932.09 as of the time of writing. When the jackpot is eventually claimed, it will reset to its seed level of £2,000. Every ticket sold contributes 3% of its value towards bumping up the value of this prize.
